I just finished a new white paper on LTE security and network protection sponsored by Stoke. The paper is about the radio-to-core link in LTE networks, and the expansion of the role of the security gateway at the border between RAN and EPC.

More on small cell - this is a conversation with Dan Picker at Purewave who has been working on small cells for a long time, building them and helping operators deploy them.

At the Small Cell Americas, Dallas, I gave a presentation on how to optimize small-cell TCO, but using multiple interfaces, Wi-Fi, multi-sector equipment, infrastructure or backhaul sharing.

Wi-Fi can be-and increasingly is-more than an offload interface onto which operators direct traffic and forget about it. When adopting an integrated, carrier-grade Wi-Fi access platform with policy functionality in the core network, operators retain visibility into the subscriber experience, can support new services that add value to their mobile broadband plans, and increase revenues.

I have written extensively on how both small cells and Wi-Fi are needed to provide the capacity boost we need to meet the rapidly growing traffic load, and mostly expounded on the strategic and deployment merits of the argument. But any decision about how small cells and Wi-Fi will coexist in the sublayer depends to a great extent on the underlying economics.

Small cells and Wi-Fi are the most powerful tools that mobile operators have to increase data capacity in their networks. Our latest report looks at the business case for small cells and Wi-Fi coexistence the the mobile network sublayer.

Backhaul is crucial to the small-cell business case. Without high-capacity, ultra-compact, low-cost backhaul, the small-cell market will struggle to grow.
Backhaul for small cells requires more than just re-purposing existing backhaul solutions. This is a new market for backhaul vendors – a big opportunity but also a big challenge as they strive to meet a very different set requirements from what they are used to in the macro-cellular environment.

A forthcoming white paper by Senza Fili for Mavenir Systems, reveals the detailed cost implications of a transition to VoMBB voice in HSPA, LTE and Wi-Fi networks that will free 2G and 3G capacity for data, and will enable future plans for spectrum refarming. Here is a preview of the paper results.

Growth in demand and worries about supply levels are driving an increase in oil prices. Why aren't traffic growth and capacity limitations raising the prices (and monetization opportunities) for wireless data?
