Wi-Fi can be-and increasingly is-more than an offload interface onto which operators direct traffic and forget about it. When adopting an integrated, carrier-grade Wi-Fi access platform with policy functionality in the core network, operators retain visibility into the subscriber experience, can support new services that add value to their mobile broadband plans, and increase revenues.

Mobile operators face one of the biggest challenges in their existence. After decade of growing subscribership and ARPU, in developed countries everybody who cares for it has a mobile phone and most subscribers are getting more services, but paying less for them.

Many marketing strategies for Value-based data plans are centered around providing more choice, increased flexibility and an overall better experience for existing subscribers, and on generating additional revenues from them. But Value-based plans are equally powerful in the preceding step: attracting new subscribers or getting feature phone users to move to smartphones.

A forthcoming white paper by Senza Fili for Mavenir Systems, reveals the detailed cost implications of a transition to VoMBB voice in HSPA, LTE and Wi-Fi networks that will free 2G and 3G capacity for data, and will enable future plans for spectrum refarming. Here is a preview of the paper results.

Growth in demand and worries about supply levels are driving an increase in oil prices. Why aren't traffic growth and capacity limitations raising the prices (and monetization opportunities) for wireless data?

I have argued for a long time that unlimited data plans are unsustainable – or basically that they are marketing fiction, because available wireless capacity is unfailingly limited, and subscribers cannot escape that fact no matter what operators tell them.
