Mobile operators

Following up on last year’s survey of mobile operators, which explored the sources of disruption in the wireless industry, we decided to narrow the focus this year to the mobile core – a part of the mobile network that is undergoing deep change and innovation.

More on small cell - this is a conversation with Dan Picker at Purewave who has been working on small cells for a long time, building them and helping operators deploy them.

Wi-Fi can be-and increasingly is-more than an offload interface onto which operators direct traffic and forget about it. When adopting an integrated, carrier-grade Wi-Fi access platform with policy functionality in the core network, operators retain visibility into the subscriber experience, can support new services that add value to their mobile broadband plans, and increase revenues.

Mobile operators face one of the biggest challenges in their existence. After decade of growing subscribership and ARPU, in developed countries everybody who cares for it has a mobile phone and most subscribers are getting more services, but paying less for them.

I have written extensively on how both small cells and Wi-Fi are needed to provide the capacity boost we need to meet the rapidly growing traffic load, and mostly expounded on the strategic and deployment merits of the argument. But any decision about how small cells and Wi-Fi will coexist in the sublayer depends to a great extent on the underlying economics.

The answer to this question is easy: We need both small cells and Wi-Fi to fit all the traffic generated by smartphone, tablets and laptops. But what is the respective role of Wi-Fi offload and small cells?

Following up on our recent report on small-cell backhaul, we have recorded a few conversations on this topic. The first one is with Andy Sutton, Principal Network Architect of Everything Everywhere, the UK operator that offers service through the Orange and T-Mobile brands.

There is a near universal consensus among mobile operators that small cells allow operators to use their existing and new spectrum assets more intensely by increasing the capacity density but there are still many areas of uncertainty. And backhaul may be the biggest one.
